SETTING THE SCENE

The introduction of 5G wireless technology marks the leap into a new age of "hyperconnectivity", enabling the connection and interaction of billions of people and things while promising to unleash the potential of technology fields such as Artificial Intelligence or Extended Reality. While this long-term perspective is quite remarkable, in the coming years it will mean above all faster network connections with enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) services.

5G WILL CREATE THE CONDITIONS FOR NEW BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES BASED ON DATA AND CONNECTIVITY THAT WILL TRANSFORM MANY INDUSTRIES.

MASSIVE IOT

With 75 billion IoT-enabled devices expected by 2025, 5G will enable this growth along with the amount of data they generate, ushering in an era of Massive IoT.

MISSION CRITICAL CONTROL

5G will be particularly groundbreaking in Mission Critical Control usage scenarios – based on a stable and low-latency connection – such as medical tele-surgery, remote control of critical infrastructures or autonomous driving.

EVOLUTION OF WIRELESS NETWORK TECHNOLOGY

The technology that enables wireless communication between devices has, over the last four decades, delivered first voice services and later mobile data and the Internet. 5G now promises to profoundly change wireless technology as well as society, and not just by simply improving 4G. Rather, 5G has been designed primarily to open up new use cases for businesses where speed, reliability and reduced latency are critical.

WHAT DRIVES THE WORLD OF 5G?

EXPONENTIAL GROWTH IN DEMAND FOR MOBILE CONNECTIVITY

The demand for faster, more consistent and reliable connections seems to be growing by the day, whether for safety-critical V2V/V2E applications in autonomous vehicles, in IoT devices to make life more comfortable, or simply for the use and sharing of high-quality video content.

GLOBAL COMPETITION FOR TECH LEADERSHIP

In a constant quest for innovation, companies compete to become technology leaders. Some of them are already lagging behind in the development of 5G-enabled infrastructure and devices, and critics see that this will affect their prospects not only now but also for the next generation of wireless technology.

(GLOBAL) STANDARDS & REGULATIONS

Regulatory authorities at national, global and industrial or vertical level need to work together to address the challenges of 5G and IoT in terms of interoperability and technical standards, spectrum and licensing, identifiers, competition, quality of service, roaming, privacy and cybersecurity.

MASSIVE INTERNET OF THINGS

MASSIVE INTERNET OF THINGS

MASSIVE INTERNET OF THINGS

With a constantly growing number of connected devices communicating with each other, IoT is increasingly becoming the vital link between "things", "people" and "processes". The 5G standard increases the connection density to 1 million devices per square kilometer (compared to the 4G standard of ~60K) – leading to the age of Massive IoT (MIoT). Consumer IoT, Smart Cities and Smart Buildings are currently the dominant and fastest growing areas of interest.

The largest players with the most mentions in the MIoT section are AT&T and Huawei, followed by Apple and Qualcomm, which has launched a Smart Cities Accelerator program, and Verizon. Huawei has also made it to the top of the "trending players" with the opening of a 5G innovation center in London, followed by Mediatek, which was named "IoT Semiconductor Company of the year" at the IoT Breakthrough Awards 2019. This is followed by Apple and Microsoft, which together with AT&T is integrating 5G into the Microsoft cloud, and Xiaomi.
