Renewable energy is generated and distributed more widely, and new installations are spreading, even in the home. Energy distribution is changing radically as a result. The electricity grid is no longer just a channel for transmitting and distributing energy from large power stations to end consumers; it is becoming a “smart grid”. Smart grids are intelligent networks that can handle two-directional energy flows, bring producers and consumers together, anticipate consumption demand, and flexibly adapt energy production and consumption. Such a grid can communicate by exchanging information on energy flows, by managing peaks in demand more effectively, by avoiding breaks in supply, and by reducing the load when necessary. As part of our effort to develop “smart-city” scenarios, Reply has built and marketed a monitoring system for small and medium-sized photovoltaic or wind installations.
The system comprises a network of sensors – smart objects – for monitoring energy generation and consumption within a building along with a sophisticated and highly connected data logger. Data on the installation is provided graphically through a website or mobile app that:
