Windows users looking for a safe area to test security have been afforded a new option from Microsoft.
A safe “sandbox” within the Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) evaluation lab in Windows can provide a virtual machine in around 20 minutes, and test any security solutions with safety by running them inside simulations.
In a recent announcement from the Redmond-based corporation, it outlined the new capability in the part of Windows Server 2019 known as Windows Defender ATP. An agile security platform designed for preventative measures, post-breach detection and in-depth investigation, the Windows Defender ATP evaluation lab is an innovative tool for clients who lack the means to test their security solutions in a secure internal lab. It’s also ideal for small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) who aren’t armed with the resources or specialist knowledge required. The evaluation lab in Windows Defender ATP offers them a convenient and secure space to try out their solutions.
Circumventing expense and complexities
Windows Defender ATP Evaluation Lab has been designed to be less complicated and more cost effective than acquiring an actual lab environment. Inside a virtual arena, users can throw a barrage of attacks at data to test the security measures they have in place and see if they’re up to scratch.
Open to both potential and existing customers alike, Microsoft is offering the Windows Defender ATP evaluation lab to anyone looking for a safe area to test their security solutions. A free trial has been made available allowing customers to request quotes and provision a total of three virtual machines in order to run simulated attacks on applications including Microsoft Office, Java and Windows 10.
This isn’t the first controlled environment Microsoft has provided for secure testing of applications. Last year the company introduced its users to Windows Sandbox to run tests.
Virtual Machines ready to work
In less than 20 minutes, users can provision Virtual Machines (VMs) to test out their solutions. Security researcher and Senior Program Manager Hadar Feldman commented how the tool spares users the difficulty of setting up testing labs and allows them to create a VM in just a single click, with very little time to wait before it is up and running.
Features of the ATP evaluation lab in Windows Defender include a simple-to-understand and user-friendly dashboard which allows clients to view all data at once in a single location. This includes an overview supplied in real-time displaying both test results and a comprehensive report on all ongoing tests. It also ships with a selection of tools to try, and a library of common simulations and tests to use.
